Mama Health’s Mumie: Supporting new mothers on their postnatal journey

New mothers face many challenges, and finding reliable answers and support can often be daunting. This is why Dr Laura Davies and Dr Sarah Andrews co-founded Mama Health and are developing an innovative web app, Mumie. Expertly crafted to cater to new mothers, Mumie will deliver an all-encompassing and user-friendly resource, guiding you through the ins and outs of postnatal care matters.

Recognising the myriad challenges women face after giving birth, Mama Health seized the opportunity to make a difference. Their all-inclusive web application will serve as a library of articles supplemented by a simple symptom-checking solution. This will guide users towards the correct information, offering much-needed support to those who need it.

Startup Struggles: Overcoming Challenges

Laura and Sarah were introduced to SETsquared by Innovate UK and eagerly joined the Entrepreneur’s Workout. This programme offered a platform for them to explore various business models and take their next steps towards growing Mama Health. Following completion, they were accepted into SETsquared Exeter’s Accelerator Programme.

According to Laura, the Accelerator Programme has been instrumental in helping them better understand the funding landscape and create more thoughtful grant applications. In November 2022, their efforts paid off when they received a successful Innovate UK grant.

Moreover, SETsquared Exeter’s technical expertise proved to be immensely useful.

Laura said: “SETsquared Exeter’s technical input has been really valuable, supporting us with product strategy and development. Sarah and I are both GPs with no technical background. We can read ‘Tech for Dummies’, but it’s not the same as having somebody sit down, explain it, and draw out your model with you.”

Next steps

Mama Health is working on its minimum viable product, anticipating the initial version to be ready by April of this year. Nevertheless, they have already formulated plans for future development based on the valuable feedback they have collected.

“We want to create different models of the app – a free and premium version”, said Laura.

“There are lots of things we’re considering, but eventually, we’d love to be able to facilitate direct connections between users and healthcare professionals, enabling individuals to discuss their postnatal concerns with experts.”
